Nothing too spectacular today. A short post on horse slaughter. It looks likely that the anti-slaughter bill that has lingered in committee for more than a year may come up for a vote sometime after July 10.

I added two short excerpts from my other novel. If you read them bear in mind they have not been through the rigorous edit process I normally put these things through.

Remembering the Somme July 4, 2006

Today, July 4, 2006, America’s 230th birthday. Most of us look up at fireworks and remember ideals like freedom, democracy and sacrifice. We remember American war dead and waving flags but for the last three days my mind has been stuck in 1916. (more…)

Foam troubles, a near-miss and ‘The New Crack’ July 3, 2006

The astronomical community is abuzz with manned space flight. A twice scrubbed shuttle mission is set to lift off tomorrow, in a first ever Independence Day launch, despite concerns over a recently formed and discovered crack in the foam insulation. (BugMeNot). In fact they aren’t going to let the problem delay the launch. (more…)
