House votes and horse polls September 1, 2006

News from the horse slaughter front.

It seems the House will vote on H.R. 503, the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act, on or around Sept. 7.

After the July 27 Agriculture Committee hearing, which moved the bill forward to the House floor with a recommendation “not to pass,” it should be interesting to see whether the bill passes or not

The version of the bill, including amendments, agreed to by the committee can be found here.

Willie Nelson opposes horse slaughter. So does powerful Texas oil magnate T. Boone Pickens.

And, a recently released poll, summarized here in a National Horse Protection Coalition press release, shows some interesting numbers.

The key findings of the poll were:

*71% of Americans believe that horses are part of America’s culture and
deserve better treatment.
* 65% of Americans believe that in many states it is illegal to sell
horse meat to eat therefore we should not be killing horses in America
for the benefit of restaurants in France and Japan.
* 64% believe that horses are not raised for food. Horses are companion
animals just like dogs and cats and killing a horse to eat is no
different than killing a cat or a dog to eat.
* 49% of voters spanning diverse geographic, political party
affiliations, gender and races are less likely to vote for their Member
of Congress if they oppose a ban on horse slaughter.

Of course, facts can be hard to discern from press releases, so take those numbers as you will.

Out in Montana I often read letters to the local rags, such as this one, in which people don’t believe that the majority of Americans oppose this practice. At the same time I have always had trouble believing that “horses that have outlived their usefulness” (as the letter writer above put it) are the only horses being slaughtered.

Somehow I don’t think old, worn out, useless horses make the best horse burgers, steaks and roasts. I mean, would you want to eat a tired, old, worn out cow? Think about it.

That aside, we shall see how the Congress responds to the apparent will of the people. If it’s anything like the way Bush and his cronies respond to widespread criticism of his administration’s policies in Iraq I don’t expect we will see much change in American law regarding horse slaughter.

i raise , train & sell horses My buissness depends on the plant staying open because of this scare you can’t hardly give a horse away there is a sortage of hay to feed them and if you put them down like dogs you have to throw them in your local dump thanks to are activist closing our rendering plant at least if you send the to slaughter you can benifit dog pounds ,zoos, glue manufatures & who knows what else the sanctuary deal they don’t work the government spends 60.000.000.00 rigth now on unwanted mustangs just think that could go to all sorts of good things not four legged unwant hay burners keep the plants open

i agreee with Mary. No one is stealing ‘pet’ horses. If you care for your aged pet horse, have it euthanized locally and do what you prefer with the remains. For horses to which no one is attached, it is a noble end to be used for food. Some horses are fortunate enough to be pets, others have no use at the end of life other than food, or landfill. sad, but true.

Defeat the stupid legislation.

I disagree with both Mary and Lyn, both who are very narrow minded and obviously, Mary is un-successful in her business and uses the plant as a way of “disposing” of those horses she would otherwise have to pay to have disposed of. Maybe a class in crop management and compassion would improve her business, and she wouldn’t need the plant anymore. It is interesting to note, that in the same paragraph she “puts them down like dogs” and then wants to help “benefit dog pounds.” Sick woman!!!!!

Lyn- you are obviously someones “pet” and unfortunately, you will be spared a death similar to one these horses suffer. I hope your owner has a different take on this bill or maybe you will be “fortunate enough to give your life for a noble cause.” I will continue to contact my legislators and support this bill.

MARY AND LYN BOTH WORK FOR THE HORSE SLAUGHTER PLANT. THEY ARE WHAT IS KNOWN AS ‘HECKLING SPIES’.

WHEN HORSE SLAUGHTER IS BANNED FROM OUR FINE COUNTRY, GUTTER-RATS SUCH AS DIRTY MARY AND FILTHY LYN WILL BE FORCED OUT OF BUSINESS…GUTTER RATS WHO HURT THE HORSE INDUSTRY AND THE ETHICAL AND PROFESSIONAL HORSEMEN.

DON’T BE FOOLED BY THE HORSE-KILLER’S DOUBLE-AGENTS’ PROPAGANDA.

THE TRUTH IS: WHEN HORSE SLAUGHTER IS BANNED: THERE WILL BE LESS ABUSE AND NEGLECT, AND HORSE THEFT AND HORSE SWINDLING (WHICH IS WHAT MARY AND LYN DO TO TRY TO STAY AFLOAT) WILL HAVE THEIR THROATS CUT AND BE BLED OUT.

I ALWAYS DID BELEIVE IN ELIMINATING VERMIN FROM THE BARN…AND THE INDUSTRY!

Call Congress Now to Support The American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act, so that we can eliminate crooks like Mary and Lyn!

Sorry for the Flame, but I see Cavel’s spies on these boards all the time. I have zero tolerance for the unethical and unprofessional so-called Horse People. They are vampires in disguise, as far as I’m concerned, have cost me more grief and money than they are worth (about 89 cents per pound, as far as I’m concerned), and I can’t wait until they go out of business, leaving the Industry CLEAN and ABOVE-BOARD. It’s about time.

these anti-slaughter people are taking up internet space. I’m doing a speach for a class on horse slaughter and can’t find anything supporting slaughter. They are distorting the truth and showing the bad only. Whatever happened to the slaughterhouses that “put-down” horses humanly?! Noone thinks to mention those, they’re too focused on the inhumanitys.

SLAUGHTER DOESN’T HURT THE HORSE INDUSTRY. IT HELPS IT. SURE SOME HOUSES ARE INHUMANE BUT WHAT ABOUT THE HUMANE ONES?! ABUSE AND NEGLECT WILL NOT BE SLOWED IF THERE IS A BAN ON SLAUGHTER!! WHY?? MOST PEOPLE DO NOT ABUSE AND NEGLECT HORSES JUST SO THEY CAN SELL THEM FOR MEAT.

ONE MORE POINT: HORSE THEFT AND SWINDLING ISN’T JUST DONE FOR SLAUGHTER…….EVER THINK ABOUT THE FACT PEOPLE CAN GET MORE FOR A GOOD HORSE ON THE BLACK MARKET OR AN OPEN SALE THAN SELLING TO SLAUGHTER HOUSES!!!!!

don’t think so……. before you critisize me, think about what I said

9. yinn - November 8, 2006

WHAT humane slaughterhouses? That’s what the legislation should have addressed, IMO, especially as considers transport, pregnant mares, etc.

10. Tommy Lee - January 27, 2008

Most people that support horse slaughter are either members of AQHA and other Overbreeders Associations. Including the AAEP and the AVMA that had taken an Oath to protect the horses. They knew many years ago that horses were being sunt to mexican plants to be stab several times in the neck to parlize the animal to be butchered. They knew Double Deckers were being Used Yet lied and ignored the truth. There are no Unwanted horses just lazy overbreeders to ignorant to get a real job and pay American Taxes. The people that believe the foreigners care is a bunch of bull. They only care for the million dollars they make every year and never having to pay Gross Income Tax as they are foreign companies. They promote illegals jobs just as the beef and pork Industries too that is why they support the horse plants its not that we will hault there business. They are the same Organizations that tried to sue Oprah for her statement on never eating a hambuger again.. HAHAHA they lost. They are laughing at Amerian People because there killing our American Icons and Pets. American jobs are being lost every day horses create many jobs. Its sad a few Pro slaughter folks think these foreigners care about your unwanted horses. These are not old and sick horses nor crazy just unsold or untrained horses that some wana bee cowboy couldnt train right. for more info visit http://www.SaveDaHorses.com
