I know I just took a break but the fact is I must leave the state for awhile. I will be dreaming of you while I spend the next 12 or so days in the Allegheny National Forest in northwest Pennsylvania. I will be around Pittsburgh for a couple days too so if I happen to be near a computer I will be certain to drop into the blogosphere to say hello.

So, I will leave you with a couple posts on topic about the Alleghenies and a list of the most popular recent posts for your reading enjoyment while I am gone. I shall return to DeKalb June 7. (more…)

Censored for impact May 21, 2006

Censored in cyberspace by antiscience, we have been.

A former French air traffic controller, Eric Julien, who has erroneously predicted that on Thursday May 25 a fragment of comet will slam into the Atlantic Ocean and cause a tsunami is now engaging in censorship of anyone who opposes his “cause” to save lives on May 25. (more…)

A couple things, quickly. Wrote a bit about horse slaughter today, a bill passed by the House Thursday could end the sale of wild mustangs for slaughter by the Bureau of Land Management.

In other notes, big day for professional sports today. (more…)

So, I am a little post happy this afternoon.

A recent post at City Barbs about Dist. 428 hiring a $100,000 per year PR specialist has spurred some good discussion on that site, check it out. (more…)

The cometary split at Exopolitics May 16, 2006

If you read my blog you might remember a Frenchman named Eric Julien, who predicts that on May 25 fragments of Comet 73P/Schwassman-Wachmann 3 will slam into the Earth causing a massive Atlantic tsunami.

This, of course, is ridiculous, at least in this instance it is.

NASA has publicly stated, numerous times that, “All of the observed fragments in 2006 will pass relatively close to the Earth during the interval May 12 through May 28 but none will pass closer than 5.5 million miles.”

“Bad Astronomer,” Phil Plait has debunked this prediction as well.

But it seems that the story doesn’t end there. (more…)

I have reorganized the nuclear emergencies database, check it out. In addition I have compiled the NRC’s nuclear emergencies for 2001, that leaves only 1999 and 2000 to compile.

I took a few photos, just minutes ago, of a cool rainbow that appeared over DeKalb this evening.

This weird weather pattern seems to be persisting with rain coming out of the northeast as a result of a huge low pressure centered over eastern Ohio. Anyway check out the photos and the blurb below: (more…)

Spaceports and commercial space travel May 15, 2006

Browsing through some of the AP stories on space I found this, via MSNBC, ‘States rush to build spaceports–again,’ not a bad story, actually. This, despite the fact that it is woefully incomplete.

The story only really talks about three commercial spaceport sites that the FAA is reviewing, but the FAA tells us far more, here (more…)

In an attempt to post an entry I had been working on about death and the business in America surrounding death I got into a huge brawl with Internet Explorer.

Like a fool, I have been addicted to IE and downloaded their newest version, IE 7, which incorporates tabbed browsing and other features found on other browsers such as Firefox or Opera. (more…)

Asteroid impact effects May 12, 2006

If you saw my last post, Asteroids and comets, and actually read it, you may have noticed that the two small objects I listed were also the two objects, out of the four, which were most likely to impact Earth, albeit that still represents a small chance.

I was interested in what types of effects the impact of a 7 meter wide object (such as 2006 JY26) or a 40 m wide object (such as 2003 SG344) would have on planet Earth. To that end the Department of Planetary Sciences Lunar and Planetary Lab at the University of Arizona has developed an interesting web based impact effects calculator. (more…)
