Still around redux May 30, 2008

Seems like I am always posting these “I am still about” announcements, but I am. I come and go, which is horrible for readers, but more manageable for me. After all, I never intended to be some A-list bigshot, I just like stuff, and like to write about it. To sate those architecture and history nuts out there, yes, there will be more on those topics. I have continued my treks around Illinois with the slow break of spring, including trips to Jo Daviess and LaSalle Counties. I have a ton of photos and a lot of research compiled about those places, so that will appear eventually. I have worked on and off on niuneedsanswers.com, look for a shift to be more encompassing in that blog soon. Until I get in a writing mood, adieu, I should have some time for some posts soon.

A new website February 23, 2008

I haven’t made any architecture posts of late because I have been busy working and doing other things. Also, I haven’t been able to locate the photos I need but I have to point out a new website that everyone must visit. It’s niuneedsanswers.com, a project I am, admittedly, involved in. Citizen journalists from around the DeKalb-NIU community will attempt to filter through reams of information and search for some answers. Check it out if you get a chance.

Architecture posts will resume on Monday.

I am still around though, there are hoards of mostly spam comments I will eventually sift through, sorry I left you all. I intend to now use this space to post photos and stories about sites I visit around the region, hidden treasures and commonly visited attractions alike. I am sick of controversy, the news, death, horrible things; I am sick of it all. So I will use this space much differently than in the past. (Save perhaps an occasional outer space related post).

In the last year I have visited over 150 sites listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places (mostly in northern and central Illinois), for many I composed Wikipedia articles, when they are available I may skip the explanations and point you to the articles, which are accurate because I wrote them. In addition, I have visited more than 15 National Historic Landmarks from Ronald Reagan’s Boyhood Home in Dixon, Illinois to Frank Lloyd Wright’s Home and Studio in Oak Park, Illinois.

I also happen to possess a fair knowledge of architecture, so I will help guide you as much as I can. A Field Guide to American Houses by Virginia McAlester and Lee McAlester is one of the best books on the market covering the topic. The work will help anyone identify the styles and characteristics of the American house, which surrounds many of us in our neighborhoods.

Anyway, this will give me something to do with this space and the hundreds of photographs I have taken.

Yeah. I have been missing. I haven’t dropped off the face of the Earth or anything. I am still here. I just haven’t been into blogging of late. I am certain to return soon. Maybe I will post something later. The horse slaughter stuff has seen a lot of activity lately. I will try to chime into some of the discussion, if any, as I have time. Sorry dear readers. So sorry.

One of the many reasons I love WordPress.com are the stats they give me on my blog. What are people searching to get here, that’s sometimes very interesting, ‘gonzo sex’ is a recurring search term. (more…)

Nothing too spectacular today. A short post on horse slaughter. It looks likely that the anti-slaughter bill that has lingered in committee for more than a year may come up for a vote sometime after July 10.

I added two short excerpts from my other novel. If you read them bear in mind they have not been through the rigorous edit process I normally put these things through.

I know I just took a break but the fact is I must leave the state for awhile. I will be dreaming of you while I spend the next 12 or so days in the Allegheny National Forest in northwest Pennsylvania. I will be around Pittsburgh for a couple days too so if I happen to be near a computer I will be certain to drop into the blogosphere to say hello.

So, I will leave you with a couple posts on topic about the Alleghenies and a list of the most popular recent posts for your reading enjoyment while I am gone. I shall return to DeKalb June 7. (more…)

I have reorganized the nuclear emergencies database, check it out. In addition I have compiled the NRC’s nuclear emergencies for 2001, that leaves only 1999 and 2000 to compile.
